Mastering the Blowout Taper with a Textured Fringe

A blowout taper with a textured fringe blends voluminous, blown-out hair on top with a clean taper at the sides and back, finished off with a casually tousled fringe. This modern look adds movement and personality, works on various hair types, and can be tailored from subtle to bold. In this post, you’ll find a simple breakdown of what it is, why it’s so popular, a step-by-step styling guide, recommended tools and products, maintenance tips, and a little story from my own experience getting this cut.

What Is the Blowout Taper with Textured Fringe?

This style combines a blowout—where the top hair is dried upward and outward for volume—with a taper that gradually shortens hair on the sides and back. The textured fringe is created by cutting the front section into uneven lengths and styling it forward in a messy way. Altogether, it’s sometimes called a “Brooklyn fade,” “blowout taper fade,” or “temple fade” depending on how high the taper starts.

Why It Works

  • Adds Dimension: The lifted top keeps hair from looking flat, making any face shape look sharper.
  • Flexible: You can go bold with long, fluffy volume or keep it tame with a subtle lift .
  • Fringe Detail: The textured fringe frames your forehead without needing precise lines—a little imperfection is part of the charm.

Step-by-Step Blowout Taper Textured Fringe Styling Guide

  1. Wash and Towel-Dry
Start with clean, damp hair—too wet and products won’t hold; too dry and you’ll miss volume.
  2. Apply a Volumizing Mousse
Work a palm-sized dollop through the top section to create a foundation for lift.
  3. Blow-Dry with a Round Brush
Point the dryer nozzle upward at a 45° angle, using a medium-sized round brush to lift roots. Rotate the brush as you dry, front to back, to build that blowout effect.
  4. Clipper Over Comb for the Taper
Decide on a low, mid, or high start point. Use a comb-and-clipper technique to blend hair from long on top down to skin or near-skin at the edges.
  5. Texturize the Fringe
Take scissors and point-cut into the front section, creating irregular lengths. This avoids a blunt line and gives a relaxed, human feel.
  6. Finish with Styling Cream
Rub a small amount of a light styling cream between your fingers, then scrunch through the fringe and top. Aim for separation, not stiffness.

Tools and Products Needed

  • Clippers and Guards: A range from #1 to #4 for smooth tapering.
  • Round Brush: About 1.5 inches in diameter to create lift.
  • Volumizing Mousse: Look for one labeled “light to medium hold.”
  • Styling Cream or Paste: Choose a flexible formula—too stiff, and it kills the natural vibe.
  • Blow Dryer with Nozzle Attachment: Directs airflow for targeted volume.

Maintenance and Aftercare

  • Trim Every 4–6 Weeks
Keep the taper tidy and the fringe at your ideal length.
  • Refresh with Dry Shampoo
On days you skip washing, a quick spritz lifts roots and soaks up oil.
  • Night Routine
Lightly towel your hair before bed and avoid heavy products that build up.

My Personal Experience and Tips

Last year, I booked this cut before a big job interview. I told my barber I wanted “that lifted, messy fringe with a clean fade,” but honestly, I was nervous it’d look too edgy. As he blow-dried and sculpted my hair, I chatted about my weekend—completely normal stuff. By the time he point-cut the fringe, I realized how a few little snips give so much character. Walking into the interview, I felt confident and like myself—quirks and all. So, don’t be afraid to chat with your barber about your daily routine; that’s how you get a cut that fits your life, not just your feed.
